Computed Tomography (CT) is a technique that utilizes thin beams of x-ray and highly sophisticated computers to generate cross-sectional images of the human anatomy. The exam is safe, quick and painless. Today’s technology allows for high resolution of images with low doses of radiation. The amount of radiation used provides much greater benefits than risks. CT scanning provides more detailed information than conventional X-ray.

About Your CT

Your CT scan will take approximately 10 minutes. The technologist will help position you on a padded table that will slide into the gantry (large ring) of the CT scanner. It is very important that you lie still and follow directions during your exam. The table will move a small distance as the scanner acquires images. You will hear some noise from the equipment as you move through the gantry. Following your exam you may resume normal activities immediately.

Preparations for Your CT

Certain CT exams require an injection of contrast (X-ray dye). This will make certain structures and blood vessels appear more visible on the images. If you are having an injection with your test, please do not eat or drink 3 hours prior to exam time. Some exams also require you to drink an oral contrast. You will be given specific instructions upon your arrival. Please feel free to call ahead or ask questions any time.

Please inform the technologist if you are or might be pregnant or have a known allergic reaction to contrast medium.
