Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a revolutionary form of diagnostic imaging with great potential to diagnose a variety of health problems at their earliest, most treatable stages. In most instances, MRI has proven to be superior to other forms of diagnostic imaging and has many clinical applications.

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce computer processed images of your inner body. Unlike X-ray or CT, MRI does not require the use of ionizing radiation. There is no pain or discomfort and no known side effects.

Our High Field Open MRI has a unique design that enables claustrophobic and/or larger patient’s accessibility, accommodating patients up to 500 lbs.

About Your MRI

The average length of an MRI is 40 minutes. The technologist will help position you on a padded table that will slide into the gantry (large opening) of the MRI scanner. All you have to do is lie still and relax during the exam. The scanner will take several pictures of your anatomy from different angles. During this time you will hear a muffled sound like a drum beat. To help you relax bring your favorite CD or tape to listen to. Earplugs are also available. Let us know if you feel anxious or uncomfortable. You may invite a friend or relative to remain with you during the exam. Our certified technologists will maintain communication with you throughout the exam.

Because of the magnetic field you will need to remove any metal objects such as jewelry, watches, hair pins, etc. Also, inform the technologist if you have any of the following: aneurysm clips, surgical staples, infusion device, foreign metal objects in the eye, shrapnel or bullet wounds, permanent eyeliner, pacemaker, pumps, and any mechanical objects.

Preparations for Your MRI

Normally no special preparation is required prior to your MRI exam. You may eat normally, take routine medications, and go about your daily routine.

Please inform the technologist if you are or might be pregnant.
